Wight Crystal achieves full BWCA Membership

The BWCA is delighted to welcome Wight Crystal, situated on the Isle of Wight, as a full bottler and distributor Member.

Wight Crystal is a widely recognised supplier of spring water and water coolers on the Isle of Wight. As a registered charity, Osel Enterprises Ltd. started Wight Crystal in 1988 to work alongside The Way Forward Programme, which provides activities supporting people with physical and learning disabilities, autism and long term conditions.

How the water-cooler industry combines business success with eco-excellence:

If British woodland managers were able to charge for tackling air pollution and removing greenhouse gases, the service in the UK would have been valued at £1.8 billion in 2015, according to the Office for National Statistics1. One company that could claim to be making a contribution to this positive effect on tackling climate change is Glastonbury Spring Water Ltd, which bottles Spring Water for both watercoolers and small pack.

The company is a Member of the British Water Cooler Association which this year published a challenge to its Members: the 5 for 5 Sustainability Pledge 2 asking Members to demonstrate what they were already doing well, to inspire others; and challenging them to perform even better across 5 areas of sustainability, over 5 years.

Land management comes naturally to those producing ‘natural’ waters – that is Spring Waters or Natural Mineral Waters which must be microbiologically safe to drink without treatment. Therefore, without well-managed, unpolluted land, the aquifers below ground would not be capable of delivering the clean, safe water these companies need. Glastonbury Spring Water is an exemplar of good, sustainable management. They value the countryside around Glastonbury and the protection of it, this is not only driven by their business activities but through strong links with their local community & support for the historic town. The Spring Water itself is sourced from deep beneath 120 acres of idyllic farmland just outside Glastonbury at Park Corner Farm.

The family-owned company is run by David Tucker and was started by his father, Ian Tucker and mother Caroline Tucker, who are Directors of the business. Step out of the site’s front door and you see the iconic Glastonbury Tor reaching high above you and swinging round you see in the distance the Pyramid Stage of the Glastonbury Festival site.

The water business started in around 1992 but the water was bottled from a different source which was bought ‘by accident’ at auction. The family bought a holiday cottage and discovered a water source beneath . “The supply was very substantial. Michael Eavis, who ran the Glastonbury Festival, didn't have a sufficient water supply and so my father bottled water for the Festival because they needed more for the fans. Glastonbury Spring Water was born,” explains David Tucker. “We did that for a few years, producing small packs (bottles) of water. My father purchased a small company in Taunton producing water for small packs and coolers and realised that the cooler sector was a good business to be in. We caught the growth of the sector in 1996-1997 and joined the BWCA fairly soon”. The company was initially based at an industrial estate in Glastonbury, tankering spring water because they had ‘grandfather rights’ (legislation does not permit tankering except under special circumstances).

Tankering was inefficient & costly, but more importantly did not fit well with the companies environmental aspirations. In 2006 Park Corner Farm became available by auction, a former County Council estate located on 120 acres of farmland adjacent to that of the National Trust. After successfully acquiring Park Corner Farm at auction the work began. When taking on the build the environment & climate change heavily influenced the way the company carried out their design. They developed a run down council farm into a state of the art production facility with every aspect of the design encompassing recyclable or renewable materials wherever possible.

All bricks in the build were reclaimed from the previous farm buildings. Sheep's wool was used as insulation for the roof. Under floor heating installed with a ground source heat pump to warm the offices & production areas. Solar panels were introduced to heat hot water in the production areas and a reed bed sewerage waste system completed the installation. All plastics, bottles, cardboard & wrapping are recycled locally & the water runs directly into the bottling plant from source without the need for transport.

Airy offices boast the original beams from the old cowshed and are around 100 years old. The company’s building was recognised through the CLA Rural Buildings Award and The Royal Bath & West Innovative Building Award.

The Tucker family is justly proud of the site they manage. They have a Higher Level Stewardship Scheme designation from Natural England for the farm, still very much active, and the land. Natural England initiative is partly based on the fact that the Tuckers avoid use of nitrate fertilisers. The site was designated a Local Wildlife Site in 2002 following a visit by the Somerset Environmental Records Centre (SERC). Even in those early days, three of the fields were judged to meet the Local Wildlife Site (LWS) criteria and official reporting shows that the conservation quality has continued to improve since first survey results reflecting “the ongoing sympathetic management”. The latest report3 records over 110 wildflowers, grasses, ferns, shrubs and trees present including wild scabious, wild geranium and two species of orchid: a few Twayblade (Neottia ovata) and a single Southern Marsh-orchid (Dactylorhiza praetermissa). They also have Pipistrelle bats. The family farm sheep and Hereford cows, but with no nitrates being used the land is completely clean of unwanted chemicals. The borehole is fenced off securely to prevent animals straying nearby.

The company bottles around 2 million litres of water annually, of which 75% is for water coolers, a highly sustainable means of supplying Spring Water as the containers are reused multiple times and then recycled. Some white label bottling goes on with contracts to supply other companies, but most of the products are Glastonbury branded. Water is mostly sold across the local region, as far south as Plymouth, across to Southampton and up to Gloucester. A fleet of 7 vans, 5 x 4 tonne vans & 2 smaller engineer vehicles service their customers, all of which are sent out full, to ensure they are as sustainable as possible in terms of logistics. The vehicles are changed every 3 years.

Of the 16 people employed by Glastonbury Spring Water Ltd, four are family members and one senior member of staff, Sales Director David Lem. David Tucker completed his ‘A’ levels some 20 years ago and took what was to have been a gap year. The gap widened, he didn’t go to university to do a degree in fire engineering, instead at 41 he runs a successful water business. David is also a Retained Fireman, one of many locals who are called out some 300 times per year. David is proud to be carrying on a family tradition. Both his father, Ian, and his father before him were part time firemen.

Glastonbury Spring Water is heavily engaged in supporting good causes locally, the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance receives ongoing support. Members of the team support Cancer Research & the company is always keen to help local charities & groups. Schools and organisations in the nearby area are often given donations of water for sports and events.

A branding update brings an attractive fresh new logo with colours that evoke the rolling hills of the Somerset countryside, whilst fully focusing on the historic Glastonbury name. The branding was a concept developed between Glastonbury Spring Water & Hola Group, in nearby Yeovil.

The site was designated in 2002 following a visit by SERC. Fields A, B1 and B2 were judged to meet the LWS criteria (see site map below). Overall, the fields have clearly improved in conservation quality since the 2001 survey which reflects the ongoing sympathetic management. Field A Field A is on a steep north-west facing slope. It has numerous small terracettes and a few notably wet patches. A flat strip at the bottom (north-west) of the field was not surveyed as it is not typical of the field and was significantly affected by pond and gully clearance work over the winter. This field contains abundant Pignut (Conopodium majus), Bracken (Pteridium aquifolium), Cat’s-ear (Hypochaeris radicata), Primrose (Primula vulgaris), and Germander Speedwell (Veronica chamaedrys). Species frequently found were Bugle (Ajuga reptans), Common Knapweed ( Centaurea nigra), Common and Greater Bird’s-foot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus and Lotus pedunculatus), Field Wood-rush (Luzula campestris), Changing Forgetme-not (Myosotis discolor), Ribwort Plantain (Plantago lanceolata), Sorrel (Rumex acetosa) and Tormentil (Potentilla erecta). The predominant grass species was Sweet Vernal-grass (Anthoxanthum odoratum), with Common Bent (Agrostis capillaris), Cock’s-foot (Dactylis glomerata) and Yorkshire Fog (Holcus lanatus) also frequent. Other species of interest were Glaucous Sedge (Carex flacca), Hairy Sedge (Carex hirta) and two orchid species: a few Twayblade (Neottia ovata) and a single Southern Marsh-orchid (Dactylorhiza praetermissa). The small wet flushes contained several rush species (Juncus): Soft-rush (J. effusus). Hard-rush (J. inflexus) and Sharp-flowered Rush (J. acutiflorus). There were also two horsetails (Equisetum): Field Horsetail (E. arvense) and Marsh Horsetail (E. palustre). A patch of Bog Stitchwort (Stellaria alsine) was found in a flush on both sides of the hedge between this field and field B1. Field B1 Field B1 is on the same north-west facing slope as field A and is similar in character and range of species although somewhat less varied. There is a large terrace-bank near the top of the field. Again, there is a flat strip at the bottom used for access to the fields. Bracken has only colonised a strip near the boundary with Field A, but Pignut is abundant. Meadow Buttercup (Ranunculus acris) is more frequent in this field. Field B2/C These two fields were surveyed together. They slope down around a hollow. The eastern slopes are steeper while the western side is terraced with a series of steep banks. At the time of the survey the eastern field was being grazed by cattle. 5 LWS Report Higher Wick Farm The eastern slopes are similar botanically to field B1. The lower part of the fields (the eastern part of former field C) is dominated by grasses and some dock. The steep banks on the western side have a notably more lime-tolerant mix of plants with the following species appearing in small numbers: Quaking-grass (Briza media), Common Centaury (Centaurium erythraea), Field Scabious (Knautia arvensis), Fairy Flax (Linum catharticum), Mouse-ear Hawkweed (Pilosella officinarum) and Burnet-saxifrage (Pimpinella saxifraga).
The upper terrace on the western side contains a clearly defined area dominated by grasses, notably Soft-brome (Bromus hordeaceus), but around half of the western field is flower-rich with abundant Lesser Trefoil (Trifolium dubium) and Cut-leaved Crane’s-bill (Geranium dissectum). This area appears to have improved significantly since the first survey, when Field C was excluded from the LWS. Conclusion
This site continues to be managed by cattle and sheep grazing with no additional inputs. This is preserving the existing flora and has apparently increased the range of plant species. The higher parts of the former field C have significantly improved since 2001. It is recommended that the boundary of the LWS is extended to include this area.

Wenlock Spring Water

Modern, sustainable business taps into one of the oldest drinking water sources in the UK

There are some who say that appreciation of fine water that is good enough to bottle is a modern fad. The water sourced by British Water Cooler Association (BWCA) Member company, Wenlock Spring, is proof that it really is such not a new phenomenon.

Wenlock Spring Water bottles premium Spring and Natural Mineral Waters near the border of Shropshire and Wales from an artesian spring that has been in continuous use as a water source since 1086. Fast forward to 2006 and the company saw its best year ever in terms of production and sales.

The company has grown to become not only one of the UK’s most successful in its sector, and the 3rd largest water cooler contract bottler in the UK, but has also developed to be one of the most environmentally sustainable operations, too. Family-owned Wenlock Spring Water bottles water for both watercooler use and small packs. Sourced in a beautiful rural area on Wenlock Edge, the waters are sourced from boreholes deep below the ground.

One of the environmental aspects of which the owners are especially proud is the amount of energy generated via a biomass boiler which the Orme brothers decided to install and commission in 2012. Says Bruce Orme: “We are situated in a very rural area and we didn't have three phase electricity - only one phase. We used diesel generators to make three-phase electricity in order to heat buildings and the water that is used to wash bottles prior to filling”.

The biomass boiler burns woodchip harvested from the farm. The fuel is cut in summer and stacked where it is left to season for 18 months. When ready for use, a contractor is brought in to chip the wood.

Trees of various species are used but in particular, larch, willow and conifers. The green, renewable energy created, including the use of closed loop systems, means that the system is carbon neutral.

Says Bruce Orme: “We have an extensive tree planting programme as, to be self-sufficient, we need 50 acres of woodland at any one time. We experimented with other options such as growing Miscanthus (silver grass) but found that the boiler efficiency dropped from its potential 200kws to just 150 kW per hour. It became clear that wood is the better option”.

The renewable energy is used to heat the offices, Cleaning in Place (CIP) systems and washrooms. 44% of all energy used is derived from renewables on site. Pride in the woodland is evident, despite the fact that so much wood is needed for the biomass boiler. The farm ‘next door’ lays claim to housing the oldest oak in the country at around 1000 years old, claim the Ormes.

The company has removed its former diesel generators completely saving 150,000 litres of diesel per year. “Without it [the biomass boiler] we wouldn't have been able to run the company as we do, as we are right on the limit of the three-phase electric grid,” explains Matthew Orme. “In addition, since 2012, the price of electricity has gone up by between 15% and 20%”.

This is an area that has been productive in various ways over the centuries. Historical records note that this was a centre for honey production: ‘Apiaries gave rise to the name Ape Dale’. The area was also home to settlements as long ago as the Iron Age.

At the heart of the estate is a 12th century farmhouse, which receives mention in the Domesday Book as it formed part of a larger settlement that included Wenlock Priory.

Brothers Matthew and Bruce Orme, and their team of around 40 colleagues, bottle both Spring Waters and Natural Mineral Waters, producing the Shropshire Hills brand for their own, Wenlock coolers as well as producing water for small pack products including private label for various contract customers. Of the water bottled at the plant, 20% is Natural Mineral Water whilst the remaining 80% is Spring Water or other drinking waters. Glass packaging accounts for 30% of number of bottles and these come in 330ml, 750ml, 500ml, and 1 litre sizes; coolers are offered in 11,12 and 19 litres although the company can fill virtually whatever size is required by contract customers.

Started in 1988, the company arose from the family’s arable and sheep farm which they’d owned and run since 1983. Previously the family farmed in Lichfield. Their father Robert Orme, who continues to farm, started the water coolers business as a means of diversification and his sons Bruce and Matthew were later to take over the business.

The biomass equipment is by no means the only aspect of running an environmentally sustainable business. Wenlock Spring has also installed PV panels which contribute more energy to the network. The Orme family also installed LED lighting to replace their previous fluorescent luminaires. This saves an enormous amount of energy and money and offers the added benefits that the lights don't attract flying insects. and The cool nature of the lamps mean that no surplus heat is generated which used to necessitate air conditioning in the meeting rooms, which are no longer needed. Having invested £20,000 on the initial upgrade programme, the payment on the new lighting was 90 weeks. After that period the company anticipates saving around £10,000 per year.

Keen to support other British businesses, Wenlock Spring recently upgraded its transport fleet by investing in a 7.5 tonne, 150 horsepower Daf lorry being made at Leyland and at Fred Smiths in the Midlands. Around 66 trucks are created there every day and all are built to order.

“It is fantastic to be able to order a bespoke truck, built in Britain,” says Bruce Orme. “We need something quite robust because of the rural locality,” he adds. They are proud of the fact that the water generally travels a very limited distance from the bottling plant.

Another aspect of the sustainability programme is the work undertaken to lighten the glass packaging for its small pack bottles. Working with their packaging partner, the 75ml glass bottles which previously weighed 450gms are now down to 400gms. The company is also improving its PET – offering by moving to a new generation of smaller and lighter bottles.

Water is plentiful on the Welsh/English border but the company has nonetheless altered the pipe work to save 1million litres of water to recycle around the site.

All the water used on the site is monitored before being discharged in an underground reservoir after which it flows through reed-beds and then, the clean water, eventually enters a river.

In addition to growing trees, the Orme family has made a big difference to the local ecology and wildlife habitats by planting new hedgerows. The site boasts 18 acres designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and natural methods of farming are chosen where possible.

The Wenlock Spring Water team are enthusiastic supporters of local charities including providing support for a local hospital – the Royal Shrewsbury League of Friends; schools; fund-raising for the Motor Neurone Disease Association; and support for the Severn Hospice.

The owners are hands-on team managers, along with some specialist colleagues. Bruce Orme oversees retail sales and general site and infrastructure management.

Matthew Orme is responsible for production and operations working closely with Kevin Henderson, the Production Manager. A recently-appointed colleague, Anna Lenartowksa, is Quality and Technical Manager, and has joined the company having worked at various food factories and food packaging.

Most staff are local although the company employs 3 non-British colleagues. It’s an important employer locally, as water companies often tend to be, providing much needed employment for people in remote rural districts. The owners are proud of the contribution they make to the local community in this regard, with many staff having been with the company for a decade or more.

It is the synergy of the business and the landscape that is the overwhelming lasting impression of this site. The respect for the landscape is evident when Matthew and Bruce talk about the topography of the area. “The limestone escarpment where we are located, that forms the Wenlock Edge, used to be located nearer the equator and moved during the ice age We therefore find fossils of creatures that lived in the sea during this period. The land is layered beneath the surface with shales, mudstones, granite and chalk and the limestone escarpment in the area was once the seabed”.

The Orme’s sense of place and their sense of duty in acting as stewards of this special site stand the company and this segment of Britain’s landscape in good stead for the future.

BWCA Training – in great demand

Industry specific training is one of the lynchpins of the BWCA. Members value that courses in hygiene, distribution and plant management, POU installation, sanitisation and crisis management will keep their staff informed, motivated and professional.

The BWCA released its 2018 dates yesterday, 14th November, and have already filled the Distribution Management to BWCA Standards course being held on 7th March.

So, to meet demand an extra course will be held on 21st March at the same venue in Fillongley.

BWCA appoints new Chairman

At the BWCA AGM, held on Wednesday 4th October, Jon Wicks, BWT UK was elected BWCA Chairman, following the resignation of long-standing Chairman, John Dundon from Waterlogic UK (Angel Springs).

Jon has been on the BWCA Executive Council for over 10 years, and until recently headed up the Technical Committee. He comes with a wealth of experience and his commitment to the industry, his knowledge, insight and leadership skills will stand the BWCA in good stead into the future.

Bricks and Water


As part of a series of hydration sheets called “Why Water Matters…” we at the BWCA have just published guidance on keeping construction teams well hydrated.

Dehydration can affect concentration and impair performance. On a busy construction site, this may lead to mistakes and accidents that should be avoidable.

Supplying water to workers on-site can often best be done by using water coolers. We recommend you deal with a BWCA Member. For a copy of the publication, including a colour-coded hydration chart, contact the BWCA.

Why Water Matters For Children


The BWCA has launched a FREE hydration fact sheet called Why Water Matters for Children, reminding schools of the benefits offered by water coolers.

The message is ‘think drink to help you think’. Being well-hydrated helps children achieve their optimum performance both mentally and physically and water is one of the healthiest means of achieving good hydration levels.

The BWCA is the leading Association representing those who supply and distribute water coolers and related products and services. They set standards of hygiene and safety for their Members through mandatory training and audits.

Why Water Matters for Children is one of a collection of six new published hydration guides. It points out the health benefits to children of drinking both milk and water, advising that sugary drinks such as juices are fine as an occasional treat but reminding schools that these should never be the main source of hydration.

The fact sheet also includes a Healthy Hydration Chart so that children can be encouraged to judge, from the colour of their urine, whether they are well-hydrated.

The fact sheet gives advice on choosing the correct coolers for particular needs and locations.

It outlines the factors to take into account when selecting a mains-fed or bottled water cooler for your particular requirements.

5 top tips to keeping your cool at work

Take advantage of your employer! No, we don’t mean by doing your internet shopping when you should be working. However, if your employer is good enough to provide a water cooler, do take advantage of the health benefits this can bring. Here are our five top tips for good health:

1. If you’re aiming to eat a healthy diet with salads for lunch, that’s great. But beware, as dentists say that more than four servings a day of acidic drinks (such as juices) and foods (including salad dressings) can weaken the enamel in our teeth. 80% of dentists spot worn-away enamel in patients every week. So, if you are enjoying dressing on your salads, or other acidic foods, make sure you limit these and take a glass of water afterwards to help cleanse your mouth.

2. Staying with that healthy diet theme, it may be obvious, but remember that water is calorie-free. So-called ‘water plus’ drinks aren’t water: they are soft drinks and some contain added sugar. By drinking water from the water cooler you know what you are getting: plain, simple water.

3. Often our brains confuse thirst with hunger, so next time you’re at work and hit that 3p.m. slump, don’t reach for the biscuits, head for the water cooler instead. It’s a great way to hydrate whilst keeping the waistline under control.

4. Headaches at work? It may not be the work that’s causing a headache, just dehydration. Instead of instantly reaching for that coffee or painkiller to perk you up, it could just be that you are dehydrated. Drink a long, cool glass of water from the water cooler first.

5. If you’re heading out for that well earner sun-downer cocktail after work, make sure you drink a large glass of water first so that you don’t treat the cocktail as a thirst quencher but something to sip and enjoy. Then, do yourself good by having a glass of water for every alcoholic drink you have.

BWCA Team completes London Triathlon

On Saturday 22nd July, Team BWCA – Chris Penn (swim), Paul Goad (run) and Richard Allen (bike) took part in the world’s largest triathlon to raise funds for Just a Drop, BWCA’s chosen charity.

So much fun was had, that the team agreed unanimously to return again next year and improve on their time. It’s still not too late to make a small donation for Just a Drop. Just visit the 4 Aces Giving Page.

Whilst finishing 101st of the 184 Corporate teams may not seem outstanding, we have to bear in mind that a slight glitch in the swimming sector meant that Chris accidently went off with the wrong group and had to get back into the water after adding a 400m run between his two swim laps. Well done!

The weather was pretty awful, but support for the teams was amazing with plenty going on to spur the athletes on. The BWCA and Just a Drop are extremely grateful for all the hard work that went into the training and thanks for all your contributions.
